CHICAGO ? A 74-year-old reputed mobster notorious for stealing the 45-carat Marlborough Diamond from a London jewelry store in 1980 has pleaded guilty in a separate rap just as his trial was set to start in Chicago.
Joseph "The Monk" Scalise (ska-LEES') pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to racketeering and other charges.
Prosecutors say Scalise and two elderly cohorts plotted several robberies, including at the home of a late Chicago mob boss. The men were arrested in 2010 outside that home.
The trial of at least one co-defendant was expected to continue this week.
Scalise spent 13 years in prison for the London theft, although the spectacular diamond was never found.
Leaving court Wednesday, Scalise told reporters that insurers could recover the rock if they "wanted to pay enough money."
