Are Gaming Consoles Becoming Obsolete? | The Loading Lounge

Are gaming consoles becoming obsolete?

The first, and I would argue most important, thing you have to take into consideration is cost, Gaming console prices keep climbing like everything else in the market and wages are not increasing. Consoles have typically been a way for the average person to game without the huge price tag of a gaming PC. But with the cost of computers and computer parts going down the line between console and PC is becoming thinner and thinner each year, eventually I think a gaming PCs will be less expensive than a Xbox or a PS3.

The second factor I would consider is games, what games are available for consoles? and for what cost? It used to be if you wanted a game you had to go the store and buy one for around$30-40. Now with digital distribution games can be purchased right on the system, no need to leave your couch. But the fee?s are going up to $60-70 a game and not all games are available to download, especially on the release date. Much the same can be said for PC games, services such as steam give the PC an edge where it never had one in the past, the majority of PC games today are bought online and they are usually a fair amount lower in cost compared to their console counter parts.

The third and final factor is features. When you buy a console, you are buying a single function device for the most part, you buy it to play games, sure PS3 has a web browser and a Blu-Ray player, but you won?t be doing any video editing on it anytime soon. When you buy a gaming PC you get the best of both worlds, you can use it for gaming plus you get all the possibility that a full fledged operating system gives you, like downloading movies and music, playing free flash games on the Internet, and just surfing the web. Why be locked down with a console when for small amount extra you could have something that could do so much more?

Are consoles becoming obsolete? My answer is yes, not anytime soon, but yes.

My advice to any gamer is if you can afford the little bit extra for a gaming PC then pay it, get something that doesn?t limit you and will save you money in the long run on games!
