With daily gun battles continuing south of the border, voters are looking to Mexico's newly elected president Enrique Pe?a-Nieto for change.
But many are wondering if legalizing drugs is an option for Mexico.
Action 4 News spoke to U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar about the legalization of drugs via Skype.
Cuellar was at Pe?a-Nieto?s victory party in Mexico City.
The Laredo-based Congressman said Pe?a-Nieto and the PRI party are against legalizing drugs but they do plan to make changes.
?He's bringing in a retired general who fought Pablo Escobar in Colombia and he used to run the national police there too,? Cuellar said. ?He's all ready to move to Mexico to advise him and give him advice on how to set up the federal police."
Action 4 News also spoke author and drug war expert Sylvia Longmire via Skype.
She said Mexico already moved to decriminalize several types of drugs in small amounts.
?That happened about three years ago, I believe, and nothing really resulted out of that,? Longmire said. ?If anything, the local drug market exploded in some parts of the country."
However, Longmire said Pe?a-Nieto may have others trying to influence him on the issue of legalizing drugs.
?He's going to come under a lot of pressure from other leaders in Central and South America, particularly in Guatemala, who are experiencing some very, very difficult and violent aspects of the drug war and they are very much towards legalization,? Longmire said.
Mexico's former President Vicente Fox also recently came out in favor of legalizing drugs but Longmire said Pe?a-Nieto is very away that the United States is firmly against legalizing drugs.
?Pe?a-Nieto is going to under a lot of pressure to go one way or the other but I don't think he'll lean to legalization very strongly any time soon,? Longmire said.

A wildfire burns in Lambert Park Tuesday, July 3, 2012 in Alpine, Utah. Fire officials say a wildfire in Utah County destroyed a barn and forced the evacuation of Alpine neighborhoods. The Lone Peak Fire District says no houses have been damaged and the fire has moved up the Wasatch mountains. The U.S. Forest Service is stepping in to fight the fire and evacuating American Fork Canyon. The Utah National Guard says it dispatched two Blackhawk helicopters with 600-gallon water buckets. With fire crews stretched around Utah, Gov. Gary Herbert called on the guard for help. (AP Photo/The Salt Lake Tribune, Leah Hogsten)

DENVER (AP) ? Rains cooled Colorado's wildfires Wednesday, but more than a dozen wildfires elsewhere in the West continued chewing through bone-dry pine and brush as firefighters working through the holiday kept a nervous eye for fireworks and other hazards.
Wildfires in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado sent haze and smoke across Colorado's Front Range, prompting air-quality health advisories as firefighters warned of growing fires in sparsely populated areas.
In Colorado Springs, there was good news in the fight against the most destructive fire in state history.
Light rains that fell overnight helped calm the Waldo Canyon Fire, which has scorched 28 square miles, killed two and destroyed almost 350 homes. Firefighters predicted full containment of the fire by Sunday, with more rain, cooler temperatures and higher humidity predicted through the weekend.
The forecast wasn't as kind in eastern Montana, where a mammoth 380-square-mile in Custer National Forest was gobbling up pine, juniper and sage with help from gusty winds. The fire has burned 16 homes.
Firefighters gave the blaze "extreme" growth potential, with wind gusts up to 45 mph predicted. Temperatures were expected to reach the 100s.
As firefighting efforts continued, holiday fireworks were canceled across the region. Colorado officials were calling off holiday displays from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs, while law enforcement was warning of hefty fines for people caught violating personal fireworks bans across the region.
Residents in some parched areas were joining police. In one Colorado Springs neighborhood, a homemade sign read, "FAIR WARNING: Anyone using or allowing use of fireworks in this neighborhood will be dealt with harshly! And that doesn't mean just by the police!"
The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, which coordinates wildfire-fighting efforts nationwide, said 45 large fires were burning Wednesday, including 36 fires in nine Western states. In Colorado alone, three fires have destroyed more than 600 homes and killed six residents.

ScienceDaily (July 3, 2012) ? Major life events such as marriage or the birth of a first child have a detrimental effect on job satisfaction, according to a study by Kingston University's Business School.
Researchers found that people feel significantly less happy at work for up to five years after the birth of their first child. They also discovered that the negative effect of major life events on job satisfaction is considerably stronger for women.
The study, published in the Journal of Vocational Behavior, tracked the annual job satisfaction levels of nearly 10,000 people in the UK between 1991 and 2008. It also suggested that there is a peak in happiness at work just prior to marriage and the birth of a first child, as people anticipate these life-changing events.
"Quite often how you feel about your job is determined by outside factors. Before the happy life event, people may experience increased job satisfaction because of the 'spillover' effect, where happiness at home influences happiness at work," report author Professor Yannis Georgellis, Director of the Centre for Research in Employment, Skills, and Society at Kingston Business School said. "But afterwards, people's focus inevitably shifts more towards home life as priorities change and the work-life conflict kicks in. This is particularly true for people when they start a family."
The findings suggest that the birth of a first child has a much greater and longer-lasting negative impact on how employees feel about their jobs. "People are less happy at work for up to five years after their first baby is born, though the effect seems to be stronger for women, especially those in the public sector," Professor Georgellis added.
He suggested that these findings should prompt employers in the UK to consider more generous maternity leave. "In Scandinavian countries they have very generous maternity leave provisions and jobs are held open for people -- perhaps that should be the case in the UK," he said. "Sweden, for instance, allocates parents 480 days per child, of which the father must take 60, and which can be taken any time until the child is eight years old."
Perhaps less surprisingly the study also indicated that higher earnings exert a positive and significant effect on job satisfaction across the board. This was again with the exception of women working in the public sector -- suggesting that women in this kind of job are more likely to be motivated by non-monetary rewards.
Long working hours were shown to have a detrimental effect on happiness at work, especially in the private sector, while employees who had recently changed jobs reported higher levels of job satisfaction.
