U.S. Navy SEAL commander dies in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The commander of an elite U.S. Navy SEAL unit has died in Afghanistan, the Defence Department said on Sunday, and a U.S. military official said his death was being investigated as a suspected suicide.

Commander Job Price, 42, of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, died on Saturday of a non-combat related injury in central Afghanistan's Uruzgan Province, the Pentagon said in a statement.

"This incident is currently under investigation," it said.

Price, was assigned to a Naval Special Warfare unit in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was the commanding officer of SEAL Team Four. He failed to show up for an event on Saturday and colleagues found him dead in his quarters, the U.S. military official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

NBC News and CNN also quoted unnamed military officials as saying that the death was being looked at as a possible suicide.

Lieutenant David Lloyd, a spokesman for Naval Special Warfare Group Two, which comprises the four SEAL teams on the U.S. East Coast, declined to comment on the cause of death, saying it was under investigation.

Price was married and had a daughter. He had been a naval officer since May 1993, Lloyd said.

Captain Robert Smith, the Group Two commander, said in a statement: "The Naval Special Warfare family is deeply saddened by the loss of our teammate. We extend our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and NSW community during this time of grieving.

"As we mourn the loss and honour the memory of our fallen teammate, those he served with will continue to carry out the mission."

SEAL is an acronym for sea, air, land.

Senators: Hagel would face tough confirmation

(AP) ? Two senators predicted Sunday that former Sen. Chuck Hagel would face a difficult confirmation if nominated by President Barack Obama to be defense secretary.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent who's retiring and wouldn't have a vote, cited Hagel's less-than-hawkish positions on Iran. Lieberman told CNN's "State of the Union" that it would be "a very tough confirmation process," and "there are reasonable questions to ask and that Chuck Hagel will have to answer."

On NBC's "Meet the Press," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said it would be "a challenging nomination."

"I don't think he's going to get many Republican votes," Graham said.

Hagel, 66, is considered the leading candidate to replace Leon Panetta at the Pentagon, although a number of GOP senators have expressed reservations about a nomination. Their concerns largely center on Hagel's past comments about Israel and Iran. Outside groups have suggested that based on Hagel's remarks, he isn't sufficiently supportive of Israel, an important ally in the Middle East.

Opponents point to his votes against sanctions on Iran and letters that Hagel signed, along with ones he declined to add his name to, many of those favored by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the powerful pro-Israel lobby. In August 2006, Hagel refused to sign a letter pressing the European Union to declare Hezbollah a terrorist organization, one of 12 senators who balked. In 2007, he sent a letter to Bush urging talks with Iran.

Hagel, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, has favored diplomacy over military action with Iran, and criticized talk of a strike by either the United States or Israel against Iran.

Lieberman said sanctions are the only way to change Tehran's behavior "short of war." Lieberman said that Hagel had "some very outlying votes" against economic penalties on Iran over its nuclear program.

Georgia Republican U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson said on ABC's "This Week" that he'll "reserve any judgment until after the hearings we have on confirmation if in fact he is nominated." Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., was non-committal about Hagel, saying she'll see "what happens with these hearings."

Hagel once made reference to the "Jewish lobby" in the United States, a comment that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called "inappropriate."

"There's no such thing as a Jewish lobby," McCain said. "There's an Armenian lobby, there's not a Jewish lobby. There's an Israeli lobby. It's called AIPAC, very influential."

At least two other candidates remain under serious consideration ? former Pentagon policy chief Michele Flournoy and Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

How Effective Are Muscle Building Drinks? - Health n Fitness

There are a plethora of drinks claiming to build muscles, each promising results better than the other. It can all get rather confusing! Do these products work? If so, how do they work and which ones are the best? Most of these products are protein based since protein is vitally important for building muscle. They can be in the form of protein shakes, powders, pills, etc., and may include ingredients such as creatin, whey, essential fatty acids, glutamine, and conjugated linoleic acid and so on. They may also contain multivitamins and fiber.

Some of these muscle building supplements may also contain hormones or steroids; so it is obvious that they must be taken only under expert medical supervision.

How effective are these drinks?

body-building-shakeMuscle building drinks that contain protein and amino acids have been shown to help in developing muscle faster and more effectively than if no supplementation was used. The quality of the product as well as the timing of using it (before a workout, right after it or later), are also important determinants of how effective they are.

Studies have demonstrated that whey protein taken right after a workout, particularly protein drinks enriched with leu?cine, can help to build lean muscle by stimulating growth. However other studies also claim that there is little or no benefit for muscle mass and strength from supplementation.

Experts warn that anyone using protein shakes, etc. should have realistic expectations. The recreational athlete may well find some benefit; however they are not a magic pill. They will probably not give you the extraordinary results that the package and advertisement portray.

Beware of possible side effects

There is also the fact that many supplements could have some negative side effects. Many people have trouble digesting whey based proteins. There could also be gas, bloating, headaches, fatigue and mood problems as a result. If you do plan to use these supplements, do your research, read what buyers have to say about a particular product and stick with the better quality, well known brands.

Adding exercise and diet will do good

Probably more important than gulping in the drinks is making sure that you eat right, exercise right, reduce stress and get enough rest. According to experts, these factors will do more for fitness and muscle building than pills, powders, protein shakes or any kind of supplements that you choose to use.

Jawbone UP

The Jawbone UP?($149.99 direct)?is in some ways everything I want from a fitness-tracking gadget. It tracks daily activity and sleep efficiency, comes with a supremely well-designed iPhone app, feels comfortable around my wrist, and includes a vibrating silent alarm, which anyone who shares a bed should at least try. And yet, when I compare it with my favorite fitness device and PCMag's Editors' Choice, the $100 Fitbit One, the Jawbone UP doesn't quite measure up.

The UP costs $50 more and misses many key features that the Fitbit just gets right. One is discretion?not everyone wants to be seen wearing what is essentially a pedometer. The Fitbit One fits snugly on a bra strap, in a pocket, or attached to your waistband. Also, the Jawbone doesn't connect to any other apps or devices. The Fitbit integrates with all the major calorie-counting apps, as well as a Wi-Fi bathroom scale, the Fitbit Aria, for automated weigh-ins.?I wanted to love the Jawbone UP, just as I wanted to love the Nike+ FuelBand. I had high expectations of both, but a middling and lackluster experience.

Design
The relatively thin and flexible bracelet comes in three sizes (small, medium, large) and eight colors: onyx, mint green, light gray, blue, navy blue, red, orange, and hunter green. An embossed zigzag extends the length of the wrap-around band, which is made of medical-grade, hypoallergenic TPU rubber. In theory, you can wear it all the time, even in the shower, although I have not yet given it the full splash test. I'll let common sense, rather?than the instruction manual,?guide that decision.

What's included? You get the UP band, a not-very-helpful quick start guide that will point you to Jawbone's website for additional instructions, and a USB charging cable. Inside the band is a lithium-ion polymer battery that lasts about 10 days on a single charge.

Some reviewers like the Jawbone UP's look, but I doubt they went to a formal dinner in a sleeveless dress while still wearing it. If a device is meant to be worn 24/7, as the Jawbone UP is, I need the option to wear it discreetly. That's a huge selling point for the Fitbit, and a major con for the UP.

It's All in the App
The best aspects of the Jawbone UP are found in the iOS app, the primary?nay, only?way you interact with data. The app shows how many miles you've walked, calories you've burned, charts of your sleeping patterns, your mood should you choose to log it daily, and a summary of what you've eaten.

But wait. There's more. From the app, you can set a silent alarm that vibrates up to 30 minutes ahead of your designated wake up time if it spots an ideal moment for you to get up based on your REM cycles. Pretty neat, eh? There's also a power nap switch that, when activated, looks at your sleep habits to determine whether your best nap would be a 27-minute rest or a 45-minute siesta, or something in between. It then sets the appropriate alarm. The Fitbit One has a silent alarm, too, but it only vibrates at the time you set. One more silent alarm I like in the Jawbone UP is an "idle alert," which I scheduled to remind me to get off my butt after 90 minutes of inactivity Monday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Graphics in the Jawbone UP's app delight the eye with vivacious colors. Interactive gesture-based motions look smooth and fluid. But here's the catch: You must connect the Jawbone to your iPhone's or iPad's headset jack to sync the data and be able to see it. That is to say, the rubbery and lightweight bracelet tells you next to nothing in itself. There are no readouts or displays on the device.?In other words, you need an iOS device. According to the company, an Android app is in hopper, but it's not on the market yet.

The Fitbit One, meanwhile, spoils you with data in a Web app, in mobile apps, and on the gadget itself. Press its tiny button, and you can cycle through your fitness stats, or just view the time, at a moment's notice.

What's Missing and Conclusions
The latest gadgets in the personal fitness market add a heart rate monitor directly on the device, no chest strap needed. I recently received a Basis Alpha to test, which has this feature, and am psyched to write about it soon. A high-tech feature such as this one sets the Jawbone UP even further behind the pack.

The few aspects of the Jawbone UP that I like, I really like. This device could have been great, but the fact that it's limited to iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users decreases its overall appeal considerably. And in light of our Editors' Choice, the Fitbit One, Jawbone's band doesn't really compete. If you have an iPhone and don't mind not being able to see your data right on the device, it could be a great option, but it's still 50 bucks more.

Many causes for learning lags in tumor disorder

Dec. 21, 2012 ? The causes of learning problems associated with an inherited brain tumor disorder are much more complex than scientists had anticipated, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis report.

The disorder, neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), is among the most common inherited pediatric brain cancer syndromes. Children born with NF1 can develop low-grade brain tumors, but their most common problems are learning and attention difficulties.

"While one of our top priorities is halting tumor growth, it's also important to ensure that these children don't have the added challenges of living with learning and behavioral problems," says senior author David H. Gutmann, MD, PhD, the Donald O. Schnuck Family Professor of Neurology. "Our results suggest that learning problems in these patients can be caused by more than one factor. Successful treatment depends on identifying the biological reasons underlying the problems seen in individual patients with NF1."

The study appears online in Annals of Neurology.

According to Gutmann, who is director of the Washington University Neurofibromatosis Center, scientists are divided when considering the basis for NF1-associated learning abnormalities and attention deficits.

Mutations in the Nf1 gene can disrupt normal regulation of an important protein called RAS in the hippocampus, a brain region critical for learning. Initial work from other investigators had shown that increased RAS activity due to defective Nf1 gene function impairs memory and attention in some Nf1 mouse models.

However, earlier studies by Gutmann and collaborator David F. Wozniak, PhD, research professor in psychiatry, showed that a mutation in the Nf1 gene lowers levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in attention. In this Nf1 mouse model, Gutmann and his colleagues found that the branches of dopamine-producing nerve cells were unusually short, limiting their ability to make and distribute dopamine and leading to reduced attention in those mice.

The new research suggests that both sides may be right.

In the latest study, postdoctoral fellow Kelly Diggs-Andrews, PhD, found that the branches of dopamine-producing nerve cells that normally extend into the hippocampus are shorter in Nf1 mice. As a result, dopamine levels are lower in that part of the brain.

Charles F. Zorumski, MD, the Samuel B. Guze Professor and head of the Department of Psychiatry, showed that the low dopamine levels disrupts the ability of nerve cells in the hippocampus to modulate the way they communicate with each other. These communication adjustments are a primary way the brain creates memories.

Researchers then found that giving Nf1 mice L-DOPA, which increases dopamine levels, restored their nerve cell branch lengths to normal and corrected the hippocampal communication defect. L-DOPA also eliminated the memory and learning deficits in these mice.

"These results and the earlier findings suggest that there are a variety of ways that NF1 may cause cognitive dysfunction in people," Gutmann says. "Some may have problems caused only by increased RAS function, others may be having problems attributable to reduced dopamine, and a third group may be having difficulties caused by both RAS and dopamine abnormalities."

To customize patient therapy, Gutmann and his colleagues are now working to develop ways to quantify the contributions of dopamine and RAS to NF1-related learning disorders.

Clays on Mars: More plentiful than expected

Friday, December 21, 2012

A new study co-authored by the Georgia Institute of Technology indicates that clay minerals, rocks that usually form when water is present for long periods of time, cover a larger portion of Mars than previously thought. In fact, Assistant Professor James Wray and the research team say clays were in some of the rocks studied by Opportunity when it landed at Eagle crater in 2004. The rover only detected acidic sulfates and has since driven about 22 miles to Endeavour Crater, an area of the planet Wray pinpointed for clays in 2009.

The study is published online in the current edition of Geophysical Research Letters.

The project, which was led by Eldar Noe Dobrea of the Planetary Science Institute, identified the clay minerals using a spectroscopic analysis from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The research shows that clays also exist in the Meridiani plains that Opportunity rolled over as it trekked toward its current position.

"It's not a surprise that Opportunity didn't find clays while exploring," said Wray, a faculty member in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "We didn't know they existed on Mars until after the rover arrived. Opportunity doesn't have the same tools that have proven so effective for detecting clays from orbit."

The clay signatures near Eagle crater are very weak, especially compared to those along the rim and inside Endeavour crater. Wray believes clays could have been more plentiful in the past, but Mars' volcanic, acidic history has probably eliminated some of them.

"It was also surprising to find clays in geologically younger terrain than the sulfates," said Dobrea. Current theories of Martian geological history suggest that clays, a product of aqueous alteration, actually formed early on when the planet's waters were more alkaline. As the water acidified due to volcanism, the dominant alteration mineralogy became sulfates. "This forces us to rethink our current hypotheses of the history of water on Mars," he added.

Even though Opportunity has reached an area believed to contain rich clay deposits, the odds are still stacked against it. Opportunity was supposed to survive for only three months. It's still going strong nine years later, but the rover's two mineralogical instruments don't work anymore. Instead, Opportunity must take pictures of rocks with its panoramic camera and analyze targets with a spectrometer to try and determine the composition of rock layers.

"So far, we've only been able to identify areas of clay deposits from orbit," said Wray. "If Opportunity can find a sample and give us a closer look, we should be able to determine how the rock was formed, such as in a deep lake, shallow pond or volcanic system."

As for the other rover on the other side of Mars, Curiosity's instruments are better equipped to search for signs of past or current conditions for habitable life, thanks in part to Opportunity. Wray is a member of Curiosity's science team.

Iraq confirms arrest of minister's bodyguards

(AP) ? Iraqi authorities said Friday they've arrested 10 bodyguards of the country's Sunni finance minister in a terrorism-related sweep, the first official confirmation in a case that is inflaming the nation's simmering political and sectarian tensions.

Protests broke out in response to the detentions in at least two cities in Sunni-dominated western Anbar province, and the United States said in unusually strong terms that it is pressing Iraq's Shiite-led government to uphold its commitment to the law.

In the year since the last American troops left Iraq, the country has been wracked by sectarian violence and political stalemate. Iraq's Sunni vice president is on the run after being convicted in absentia and sentenced to death on terror charges, and bloody attacks by Sunni extremists against Shiites still take place frequently.

Critics of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki accuse him of unfairly sidelining Sunni political rivals while seeking to consolidate power in the hands of Iraq's majority Shiites. Al-Maliki's government says it is committed to the rule of law and does not follow a sectarian agenda.

Late on Thursday, Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi accused an unspecified "militia force" of "kidnapping" members of his staff and said at a news conference that he holds al-Maliki personally responsible for their safety. Al-Issawi suggested the prime minister had knowledge of the moves against his employees and urged the parliament to hold a no-confidence vote against him.

Supreme Judicial Council spokesman Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar told The Associated Press Friday that the chief of al-Issawi's protection force was arrested on Wednesday on the strength of confessions obtained by the authorities. The chief had confessed that he took part in terrorist attacks, and nine other bodyguards were held while the investigation proceeds, Bayrkdar said.

The Interior Ministry posted the names and arrest warrants of the suspects on its official website, including the security chief, identified as Col. Mahmoud al-Issawi.

The arrests are a concern for Washington. American officials have been engaged with Iraqi political leaders since hearing about the detentions and have urged the government to uphold commitments to due process and the rule of law, according to a U.S. Embassy official.

"Any actions from any party that subverts the rule of law or provokes ethnic or sectarian tension risks undermining the significant progress Iraq has made toward peace and stability," said the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The arrests come at a sensitive time for Iraq. The country's ailing President Jalal Talabani was flown to Germany on Thursday for medical treatment following what has been described as a serious stroke earlier this week. The 79-year-old president is widely seen as a unifying figure with the clout to mediate among the country's ethnic and sectarian groups.

On Friday, al-Maliki defended the arrests as legal and based on warrants issued by judicial authorities. He accused al-Issawi of fabricating a political crisis for personal gain and criticized him for referring to security forces as militias.

"Sunnis, Shiites and all the people must know that carrying out arrest warrants against suspects doesn't mean targeting a specific sect," al-Maliki said in a statement.

Al-Issawi is a member of the Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc, which has been in a long-running row with al-Maliki over power sharing. Tensions have been on the rise since an arrest warrant was issued against Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, one of al-Issawi's political allies, just as the last U.S. troops were leaving a year ago.

Al-Hashemi has been given several death sentences over the past year after Iraqi courts found him guilty in absentia in multiple terrorism-related cases. He is accused of running death squads to target government officials and Shiite pilgrims, a charge that he has denied and sees as a political vendetta. He is now living in exile in neighboring Turkey.

Al-Hashemi voiced solidarity with al-Issawi in a statement Friday. He also lashed out at al-Maliki, saying the "the tyrant of Baghdad will not keep quiet until he targets all of his opponents."

The prime minister's spokesman, Ali al-Moussawi, dismissed that charge as meaningless. He said the issue of the finance ministry guards' arrest had been blown out of proportion, adding that the government is committed to ensuring that proper legal procedures are followed.

Iraq's Sunni Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq, meanwhile, threatened that the Iraqiya bloc could withdraw from the political process altogether if lawmakers and independent bodies are not allowed to monitor the investigation involving al-Issawi's staff.

In Anbar province, a Sunni stronghold west of Baghdad, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Ramadi and Fallujah to protest the arrests, according to police officials and a local resident. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media about the protests. The witness spoke without giving his name out of concern for his safety.

Some of the protesters fired gunshots into the air. Others carried banners reading "Al-Maliki and terrorism are two faces for the same coin" and "Do not provoke us because we can resist," the police officials and the witness said.

Barca's coach Vilanova has tumour relapse

Barcelona will have to continue their march at the top of Spanish soccer's La Liga with coach Tito Vilanova on the sidelines after the club revealed on Wednesday he had suffered a relapse of a tumour on which he was operated just over a year ago.

The 44-year-old, who took over from Pep Guardiola at the start of the season, was thought to have fully recovered from the surgery to remove a growth on his parotid gland, and he was back at work within 15 days.

However, after an operation on Thursday, it is thought he will have treatment for at least six weeks and might not be available to return to work during that time.

Until then, Sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta confirmed on Thursday the side will be led by Vilanova's team, with his assistant Jordi Roura at the helm.

"Without going into too much detail about the sporting side today and whether we win or not at Valladolid on Saturday, just to say we'll continue with our coaching staff and our way of working, we'll be in extraordinary hands and Tito I'm sure will be watching us on TV," he said.

Barca president Sandro Rossell added "the most important thing for the club at this moment is the full recovery of Tito".

Vilanova has led Barcelona to the most successful start to a season in La Liga history, with 15 wins and one draw in 16 matches.

With the final round of La Liga games of 2012 brought forward to allow players an extra day of Christmas holidays, Barca will make it a great finish to the year, on the pitch at least, if they take three points at Valladolid on Saturday.

Last weekend's win over closest rivals Atletico Madrid increased the Catalan side's lead to nine points at the top of the table. With Real Madrid's surprise draw with Espanyol leaving them 13 points back in third, for some the title is already destined for the Nou Camp in May.

That win was followed with the news on Monday that Carles Puyol and Xavi Hernandez will stay at Barca until at least 2016 and Lionel Messi until 2018, and it was all looking positive until Wednesday's shock news.

Atletico play Celta Vigo on Friday in the hope of continuing an excellent run of eight home wins since the league began, to keep up some sort of pressure on the Catalans.

Real Madrid face a tricky trip to fourth-placed Malaga less than a week after manager Jose Mourinho said the title was "almost impossible now."

Malaga come into the game with the best defensive record in the league having conceded only 10 in 16 games.

In other matches, Rayo Vallecano host Levante, Real Sociedad are home to Sevilla, Deportivo La Coruna travel to Espanyol, Valencia take on Getafe, Betis play Mallorca, Osasuna are up against Granada and Athletic Bilbao meet Zaragoza.

Amazon Studios puts six original comedy series into pilot production

After putting out an open call for original content last May, Amazon Studios is ready to begin production on six comedy pilots. Culled from a writer base consisting of industry vets (some award winning, some from the minds of Big Bang Theory stars, some backed by the adorably creepy Kristen Schaal) and unknowns, these scripted entries will be hosted for free on the company's Instant Video platform once completed. And since there's no better focus group than an existing customer base, Amazon intends take user feedback into account when selecting which of these pilots goes into full production. Series that do make it past that final greenlight will end up on the mega e-retailer's Instant Video and Lovefilm portals as exclusive content for Prime subscribers. Head past the break to check out the full list of eligible shows.

Beringer White Zinfandel California (2011)

Nice colour, pleasant smell of berries. Sweet, but not too sweet, very easy to drink, quite enjoyable wine.

You could get really drunk with this if you're not careful, its friendly nature and 10% alcohol content will keep you refilling.

It's not interesting enough to warrant a higher score but I don't think there is anything wrong with this wine. I enjoyed it and I would buy it again as an everyday wine.

Arizona group eyes allowing guns in schools

PHOENIX (AP) ? A group that advocates for pro-gun, state legislation said Wednesday guns should be allowed in Arizona public schools to provide protection against shootings such as the one in Connecticut.

"It's long past time to, at the very least, allow our school faculty and staff the option to be trained and armed," the Arizona Citizens Defense League said in a statement. "Only then will they be capable of dealing with a situation like this."

Amid public debate over what to do in response to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, the league is "now looking at things that can be done to heighten security in schools," spokesman Charles Heller said during an earlier interview. "We hadn't been before."

Arizona law now generally bans taking guns on school grounds.

The statement by the league decried the violence in Connecticut and stopped short of announcing a 2013 legislative proposal to allow guns on campuses.

Heller said his group is considering options, but he couldn't discuss specifics. The session starts in mid-January, and no proposed bills filed as yet deal with gun issues.

A teachers union leader said everybody wants to protect students but allowing school personnel to have guns on campuses would pose safety and security threats, partly by opening the door to unintended consequences.

"That's the last thing on their minds, to be carrying firearms in close proximity to students," said Arizona Education President Andrew Morrill. "That's not going to help."

Gun control proposals went nowhere in the Republican-led Arizona Legislature after the January 2011 shooting that wounded then-Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson.

In the next two legislative sessions, state lawmakers twice approved bills to allow guns in many public buildings without airport-style security and once to allow them on higher-education campuses.

However, Republican Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed all three versions of those two bills that reached her desk. She said in May her veto of the latest such bill reflected public unease.

Matthew Benson, a Brewer spokesman, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the league's statement.

Arizona has permissive gun laws and a Wild West heritage. Guns can be carried openly, sometimes jolting newcomers, particularly in urban areas.

On Monday, Brewer sounded disinclined to weaken the right to bear arms in response to the Connecticut shooting.

"I'm not sure if it's something that needs to be addressed in that respect," Brewer said, adding that a stronger behavioral health system "would probably be something that we ought to look into."

Hildy Saizow, president of Arizonans for Gun Safety, said relaxation of gun-free zones at schools and other places would be "really extremist legislation."

Instead, now is the time to support national legislation that should include toughening requirements for background checks of gun purchasers, Saizow said.

Alan Korwin, a Scottsdale author and publisher of books on gun laws, said the media is whipping public sentiment into a "mob mentality" in favor of new gun restrictions after the Connecticut shootings.

That ignores the benefits of allowing guns where they're not now allowed, he said.

Gun-free zones "enable criminals and infringe on the rights and abilities of Americans to protect themselves and their children," Korwin said. "We trust teachers with our children. Certainly they should be qualified" to have guns at schools.

An Arizona legislator who sponsored a bill after the 2011 Tucson shooting to prohibit extended magazines that hold more than 10 bullets said it would be dangerous to allow guns at schools.

"I do not see anything good of a massive arms race on our college campuses or, God forbid, on our elementary schools," said Rep. Steve Farley. "There's no good that's going to come of that."

Farley, a Tucson Democrat who becomes a state senator in January, said he won't re-introduce a new version of his bill in 2013. Such restrictions are best handled by Washington to avoid a patchwork of state laws, he said.

Farley said he proposed the 2011 bill because Tucson shooter Jared Loughner fired 30 shots from a handgun with an extended magazine. Six people were killed and 13 injured in the attack, and Farley said there would have been less carnage if Loughner had to reload sooner.

Farley's bill died after not getting a hearing from a House committee.

Farley also said he wants the Legislature to consider providing adequate funding for programs to identify and treat mentally ill people and to protect children from physical abuse so they don't develop psychological problems.

Dodge, Chevrolet, and Ford -- lead the automotive sector in advertising

Three American car brands ? Dodge, Chevrolet, and Ford -- lead the automotive sector in advertising awareness with potential US car buyers over the past four weeks.

Dodge ads introducing a second comical series of ?New Rules? spots for its 2013 Dart sedan in November, including ?How to Test Your Car for Fun,? ?How to Make a Great Car Interior? and ?How to Make a Car for an Unsafe World.? 39% of U.S. near-term car buyers say that have seen recent advertising from Dodge.

Chevrolet came in second with a score of 36%. The brand began two partnerships over the past few weeks: one with Live Nation this month promoting its Sonic subcompact vehicle, and another with millennial-focused social media platform Dailybreak.com offering a chance to win a new Cruze, Sonic or Spark.

At the end of November, Ford launched a new African-America-directed campaign across TV, web and radio for its redesigned Fusion sedan, starring actor Andre Royo?s of HBO?s ?The Wire.? Ford had already begun its Fusion unveil earlier in the month, altogether bringing its ad awareness to 36% as well.

The auto brands rounding out the top ten in ad awareness with potential car buyers over the past month are: Lexus (36%), Toyota (33%), General Motors (28%), Volkswagen (28%), Fiat (28%), Mercedes Benz (27%), and Honda (26%).

27 automobile brands sold in the U.S. were measured with YouGov BrandIndex?s Ad Awareness score which asks respondents: ?Which of the following brands have you seen an advertisement for in the past two weeks?? Results were filtered for adults 18+ who plan to purchase a new car in the next six months, and compiled on a four-week moving average.

Wal-Mart : Probe continues in Mexico bribery case

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. says it continues an internal investigation into allegations that its Mexico subsidiary paid bribes to get stores built and will cooperate with any investigations by authorities.

The company is responding to a new report by The New York Times saying 19 store sites across Mexico were the target of Wal-Mart bribes. Among them is a store near Teotihuacan, the site of the famous pyramids outside Mexico City.

The Times says that Wal-Mart de Mexico paid more than $200,000 to circumvent zoning and other laws preserving archaeological sites to get the store built in 2004.

A Wal-Mart statement Tuesday says the Teotihuacan store is part of the company investigation that began about a year ago.

The Times first reported on allegations of Wal-Mart bribery last April.

Avoid the strong-arm: 3 tips for smarter small business marketing ...

Post image for Avoid the strong-arm: 3 tips for smarter small business marketing

by Red Slice on December 18, 2012

I?ve been hearing some disturbing stories about Yelp?s aggressive (and sometimes intidimdating) sales tactics to purchase paid advertising ? and recently got to experience it on the phone firsthand on behalf of a local nail salon owner friend. I?m still gathering info about this to approach a WSJ reporter who could investigate these claims further and fairly get Yelp?s side of the story. (PS, if you have a story to share, please email me) Makes me not want to use them anymore, and I used to love them.

One small business owner I know claimed that when she turned the ad sales rep down, he said, ?Well, this will destroy your business, you know.? Another story I heard was that someone had signed a year long contract with them ? and claims it was the worst mistake he ever made and wished he could get out of the contract.

But since this is all circumstantial, and this is a blog of my own perspectives and opinions (and not an investigative journalism outfit), I wanted to instead?share three must-do tips to avoid being strong-armed into making poor marketing choices:

  1. Know your audience: Sounds obvious, but be crystal clear on your target ideal customers. Not just ?women? but what age, income? Where are they and what do they do for a living? What do they care about? What are their hobbies and interests? Build this character profile and you stand a much better chance of asking the right questions of advertisers to ensure you?re not wasting your money. (Tweet this!)?For example, if your business appeals more to high-income working moms in urban areas, you can avoid spending money on advertising to stay-at-home moms or young teen women, let?s say.
  2. Ask about the ROI:? Ask for?references, proof points or statistics. If they say their website traffic is ?really good? ask to see a breakdown of unique visitors and where they are coming from.? If they say their other advertisers are seeing great results, ask for case studies or if they will let you speak to at least 3 of them as a reference check. Ask if there is any guarantee on performance or credit given if things underperform ? do they provide performance statistics for you? Don?t be afraid to ask an advertiser to prove their claims. (Tweet this!)?And make sure if you invest that you do so for a test period and track your sales and visits accordingly. Recently, I placed an ad with HARO and they have not responded to requests to provide click through data on the ad. Lesson learned: I should have done a better job of tracking that myself!
  3. Talk to others: Don?t be afraid to reach out to other local small businesses or others in your field and ask about what they are hearing regarding the outlet. Collaborate with others and don?t pretend you know all the answers. (Tweet this!) This will save your butt and avoid mistakes. For example, if you are part of the local SBA, merchants association or a networking group (even one online), ask others if they?ve invested in what you are considering and what their success has been. One small business owner I talked to shared that a business which could have been perceived as competitive shared his negative Yelp advertising experience with other similar businesses in the area, just to help them avoid the same mistakes. There?s enough to go around, and wee?re all in this together so ask about and share these lessons.

What has IT got to offer your business in 2013? - Small Business ...

When it comes to techie toys, this New Year is full of potential for small businesses - and towering in importance for technology companies. We always expect smaller, lighter and/or more powerful computing, but this year there is a welter of other trends jostling for a business owner?s attention. We asked some experienced entrepreneurs who are also steeped in IT what to watch out for, and the implications for business.

San Francisco based Michael Wolfe is CEO of Pipewise, his fourth startup company. He has advised or served on the board of many more. He says cheap tablet computers are on the horizon: ?these things will eventually be cheaper than a hardback book. Many people will skip smartphones completely and move directly to small tablets. You will own multiple tablets optimised for different purposes ? we will think of them as replacements for paper?.

The average family home already has six internet-connected devices, and the consumerisation of tablets is only going to increase that number. For businesses, this means more than fun new toys. A sales meeting with presentations on paper is going to look increasingly old-fashioned. More importantly, customers in retail or service situations are going to demand seamless service: the processes of ordering goods and paying for them, with a
scan or a swipe, should become utterly painless ? technology ought to banish the till queue once and for all!

Chris Mellish, founder and CTO of leading web design agency, Pure Innovation, agrees; and adds that, thanks to tablets, websites are set to change forever. ?Touch screens are already here and Windows 8 brings the touch revolution to your desktop. A seismic shift is coming in the way websites are being designed and developed, taking advantage of these devices to deliver a more interactive and visually rich experience.? Ironically this change is being championed by one of the big failures of the last decade ? Myspace, whose new website behaves more like a tablet application with content streaming and sliding on to the screen. They have made the top web designers stop and think.? In the next couple of years, building sites to this standard will have to become routine for all.?

Returning to seamless service, the demand for immediacy and simplicity is also behind several new successful businesses, and the driver for some important new technologies. Tom Ball is a serial entrepreneur with a voracious appetite for new opportunities. His latest venture is NearDesk, a card which offers business owners access to hundreds of serviced offices, meeting rooms or single desks with the convenience of a single monthly bill. Embedded in the NearDesk card is our next tip for the year: Near Field Communication, or NFC.

?This allows NearDesk users to enter rooms, order coffee or make photocopies without endless logging in or totting up different bills?, says Ball. ?NFC is now appearing in many mobile phones, and it?s all about making life simpler.? NFC is the clever bit inside Oyster cards (used by millions of Londoners for public transport), and it?s a cheap technology. For small businesses, it will drive opportunities for deeply customised service (for example, tap a loyalty card at a kiosk for a discount) or ever deeper knowledge about staff and customers (for example, who has gone where in a warehouse complex).

All that knowledge creates a burgeoning stream of ?big data?. Larger companies are working out how to use that information to build a more commercially deep understanding of customers as individuals; but even small businesses can improve each interaction. Pure Innovation?s Chris Mellish says: ?Companies are tracking footfall into stores by tracking customers? mobile phones.? They can use this data to make sure they have appropriate staffing levels, to make sure that the store has the optimal layout, or even to monitor the influence their in-store music is having on their customers. If I had to choose one word to sum up the technology opportunity for 2013 it would be ?experience?. For example, we are working with one company that aims to abolish queuing, instead enabling people to carry out other activities whilst waiting in a virtual queue.? At a recent trial in a shopping centre,
instead of having kids queue for up to three hours to see Santa, they were able to go shopping with their parents for a couple of hours before joining a 2-minute long queue when it was their turn.? Both kids and parents were much happier.?

Then, there is a raft of interconnected tools and techniques which no business can ignore. You will almost certainly already be using Cloud services; where information is stored and processes are run online instead of on the desktop. This reduces the need for capital spend on computing, and also offsets the risk of data loss or other technical problems to your hosting partner: a qualified expert third party. As Pipewise?s Wolfe says, ?Trillions of dollars of IT spending are moving from data centres and software licenses to cloud services. Soon you'll be able to read about companies with 10,000 employees who don't have dedicated data centres.?

With that comes the business model of cloud; namely a proliferation of rental, pay-as-you-go, no-contract or ?as a service? models. Whether you?re looking for customer management tools, a new website, lead generation or even real people to do stuff for you by the hour, the internet and the cloud puts more talented people and services across the globe at your disposal, for less money, and with no upfront cost or ongoing commitment.

With all your data, knowledge and contacts in the cloud, it makes sense to have access to them whenever and wherever you need them; and that means the continuation of the inexorable growth of mobile services; with more connected devices (phone handsets, tablets, kiosks and app-controlled industrial tools) than ever before. In summary, with the cloud, we will be more connected more of the time on more devices and at a lower cost. This will reduce the cost of starting and running businesses or indeed just trying out new ideas. Equally, it also creates a new ?arms race? of competitiveness: businesses must appreciate that anyone, of any size, can enter markets, niches or even take outright punts with greater fluidity.

If you haven?t heard of BYOD, it?ll be one of 2013?s watchwords. It?s delightfully untechie meaning is ?Bring Your Own Device? and refers to the rapidly increasing practice of staff bringing their own kit to work. Employees are happiest working on the laptop or phone with which they are familiar ? with pictures of their children on the home screen. Companies get increased productivity and lower costs as a result. But with that comes concerns of security and consistency of technologies used.

Elizabeth Varley, co-founder and CEO of TechHub, the community and workspace network for tech entrepreneurs in the UK, Europe and soon the US, says ?BYOD is a challenge that?s going to need to be addressed by corporates as it?s a current and growing reality.? We?ll see companies cottoning onto this in 2013. Startups like Enterproid, with their Divide product are going to become indispensible in order to manage serious security needs while allowing the freedom of personal device choice for productivity and recognizing the growing individual desire to be constantly connected personally.?

These are just a few of the major trends to watch out for ? there are plenty more. Use of video will continue to grow: with good broadband now the default connection for most consumers, is it possible to market yourself effectively without the moving image? And what about flexible screens and wearables: 2013 is the year that we could end up wearing screens on our wrists ? or at the very least not breaking our phones by sitting on them. Have a fine, prosperous and silicon-driven New Year!

When Bill Kristol Tells The Journal to Give Up on the Cliff, Is That Progress?

The Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol is telling The Wall Street Journal's editorial board to give up, and stop insisting that House Republicans have much leverage at all on the fiscal cliff ? or any, should we go over it. It's a sign that maybe there's an emerging conservative consensus, given the growing number of Republican lawmakers suggesting the party should cave on lettings tax rates go up for the top 2 percent of income earners. Republican Sen. Bob Corker said on?Fox News Sunday, "There is a growing group of folks that are looking at this and?realizing?that we don?t have a lot of cards on the tax issue before year end...?A lot of people are putting forth a?theory, and I actually think it has merit, where you go ahead give the president the two percent increase that he is talking about ? the rate increase on the top two percent ? and all of a sudden the shift goes?back?to entitlements." Could this mean we're getting closer to a deal?

RELATED: The Weekly Standard Distances Itself From That Homophobic Email

Certainly, there are still holdouts. The Journal editorial claims that Republicans will have more leverage if we go over the cliff.

It's certainly true that Republicans can't stop a tax rate increase if Mr. Obama is determined to make it happen. The Bush-era rates automatically go up on January 1, and the House can't extend them alone.

But Mr. Obama also can't get what he wants without House Republicans. He needs their votes to extend current rates for lower-income taxpayers, as well as to prevent the Alternative Minimum Tax from hitting 27 million more taxpayers... Senate Democrats running for re-election in 2014 won't want that on their resume.

Kristol's response? Come on, guys. Will House Republicans really block Democratic legislation to cut taxes for "the vast majority of taxpayers"? That seems unlikely.

President Obama will be beating the drums for this tax cut. Senate Democrats will pass this tax cut. If Senate Republicans vote against it, it won't be "Senate Democrats?running for re-election in 2014" who will have a tax hike on their resumes. It will be Senate Republicans who will have voted against cutting taxes. And if House Republicans block such legislation, it will be they, and they alone, insisting on higher taxes.

Of course they won't. Republicans will fold with lightning speed after we go over the tax cliff on January 1.

The Journal is giving bad advice, Kristol says. Following it would mean turning "a manageable tactical retreat in December into a panicked strategic rout."

RELATED: The Wall Street Journal Lays Into Romney's 'Dumb' Campaign

Of course, Kristol has indicated that raising taxes might not be the worst thing in the world, saying right after the election, "It won't kill the country if we raise taxes a little bit on millionaires." Still, lots of liberal writers, like New York's Jonathan Chait, have made the case that Obama's leverage goes up dramatically if we go over the cliff. It's?significant?we're seeing the same argument from a Fox News pundit who edits? The Weekly Standard.?

McAfee wants to return to US, 'normal life'

BACALAR, Mexico (AP) ? Software company founder John McAfee said Sunday he wants to return to the United States and "settle down to whatever normal life" he can.

In a live-stream Internet broadcast from the Guatemalan detention center where he is fighting a government order that he be returned to Belize, the 67-year-old said "I simply would like to live comfortably day by day, fish, swim, enjoy my declining years."

Police in neighboring Belize want to question McAfee in the fatal shooting of a U.S. expatriate who lived near his home on a Belizean island in November.

The creator of the McAfee antivirus program again denied involvement in the killing during the Sunday Internet video hook-up, during which he answered what he said were reporters' questions.

His comments were sometimes contradictory. McAfee is an acknowledged practical joker who has dabbled in yoga, ultra-light aircraft and the production of herbal medications.

The British-born McAfee first said that returning to the United States "is my only hope now." But he later added, "I would be happy to go to England, I have dual citizenship."

He was emphatic that "I cannot ever return to Belize .... there is no hope for my life if I am ever returned to Belize."

"If I am returned," he said, "bad things will clearly happen to me."

He descibed the health problems that had him briefly hospitalized earlier this week after Guatemalan authorities detained him for entering the country illegally. He apparently snuck in across a rural, unguarded spot along the border.

"I did not eat for two days, I drank very little liquids, and for the first time in many years I've been smoking almost non-stop," he said. "I stood up, passed out hit my head on the wall, came to," though he now said he was feeling better.

McAfee praised the role his 20-year-old Belizean girlfriend, Samantha Vanegas, played in his escape from Belize, where he claims he is being persecuted by corrupt politicians. Authorities in Belize deny that they are persecuting him and have questioned his mental state.

"Sam saved the day many times" during their escape, he said, and suggested he would take her with him to the United States if he is allowed to go there.

He confirmed that journalists from Vice magazine who accompanied him on his escape after weeks of hiding in Belize had unwittingly posted photos with embedded data that revealed his exact location.

"It was an error anyone could make," he said, noting they were under a lot of pressure at the time.

McAfee has led an eccentric life since he sold his stake in the anti-virus software company named after him in the early 1990s and moved to Belize about three years ago to lower his taxes.

He told The New York Times in 2009 that he had lost all but $4 million of his $100 million fortune in the U.S. financial crisis. However, a story on the Gizmodo website quoted him as describing that claim as "not very accurate at all."

McAfee's Guatemalan attorney, Telesforo Guerra, says that he has filed three separate legal appeals in the hope that his client can stay in Guatemala, where his political asylum request was rejected.

Guerra said he filed an appeal for a judge to make sure McAfee's physical integrity is protected, an appeal against the asylum denial and a petition with immigration officials to allow his client to stay in this Central American country indefinitely.

The appeals could take several days to resolve, Guerra said. He added that he could still use several other legal resources but wouldn't give any other details.

Fredy Viana, a spokesman for the Immigration Department, said that before the agency looks into the request to allow McAfee to stay in Guatemala, a judge must first deal with the appeal asking that authorities make sure McAfee's physical integrity is protected.

"We won't look into (allowing him to stay) until the other appeal is resolved," Viana said. "The law gives me 30 days to resolve the issue."

McAfee went on the run last month after Belizean officials tried to question him about the killing of Gregory Viant Faull, who was shot to death in early November.

McAfee acknowledges that his dogs were bothersome and that Faull had complained about them, but denies killing Faull. Faull's home was a couple of houses down from McAfee's compound in Ambergris Caye, off Belize's Caribbean coast.

Yeah, no, not really. But Eyliel's questions made me think yeah, I should probably make a thread so tada. Any questions you may have about the RP such as how your species works, what powers are okay and what your character's strengths and weaknesses are go here. Ask anything :) Yeah, actually, that's a good one. It doesn't even have to be related to the RP, ask me what the purpose of a man is, why women wear bras, why plates are round and who invented coricidin. I'm like the chick with boobs on her head, Yoda. I have all the answers to the world so throw me.

Were Questionnaire

Eyliel: How much do their animal forms actually resemble animals?
A: They look like the animal they transform into with very little - perhaps only the eyes - resemblance to humans. But they might be bigger or smaller than the average animal. Werelions - when transformed - look like lions and wererats - when transformed - look like rats.

Eyliel: How strong exactly are they when not in their animal form?
A: Quicker reflexes, better sense of smell, faster, stronger. They're not as quick or as endurable as a Vamp in their human forms but whilst Vamps are harder to crush (tougher/heightened endurance), Weres have more strength and have better noses. Vamps on the other hand have better eyesight and so on.

Eyliel: How strong when in [animal form]?
A: Stronger than the average animal. It depends on what animal you are. For example, a werecheetah in his/her animal form might be incredibly fast, faster than the average cheetah. Were teeth in general can easily snap through human bones but I mean, it really depends on your animal. A werefrog can't snap through bones, obviously. Weres are basically super animals.

Eyliel: Is their ability to change their form highly magical, with matter 'appearing' or 'disappearing' from/to nowhere when they change, or is all the flesh needed for their alternate form squeezed somewhere within their body?
A: It's pretty magical. Say, you might have a mass of 90kg, your transformation can leave you with a mass of 200 or even 20.

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence of trying.
